On May 30th, national officials from the G7 countries will convene in Japan to address the challenges presented by generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT.

This meeting follows the establishment of an intergovernmental forum named the "Hiroshima AI process," which was agreed upon by the G7 to facilitate discussions on the increasing use of AI tools. In their joint statement released after the forum, the G7 emphasized the importance of promptly assessing the opportunities and challenges associated with generative AI, given its growing prominence across various countries and sectors.

Takeaki Matsumoto, Japan's communications minister, announced that during the upcoming meeting, G7 officials will conduct the first working-level AI session to deliberate on crucial topics like intellectual property protection, countering disinformation, and establishing appropriate governance frameworks for this technology.

The G7's actions are part of broader initiatives aimed at regulating AI, including significant developments such as the AI Act passed by the EU Parliament. In the latest phase of the European AI Act, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted in favor of increased transparency for AI models like ChatGPT.

Matsumoto, as this year's chair of the G7, emphasized Japan's commitment to leading discussions within the group regarding responsible and responsive use of generative AI technology.
